Ageing Well: 100 Ways to Care for Seniors Exhibition in Form Society
As a creative studio focused on seniors, OHH Dear Communications holds deep reflections on the subject of ageing. Supported by the Evangelical Lutheran Church Social Service – Hong Kong (ELCHK) and implemented by ELCHK Essence Hub, the “Ageing Well: 100 Ways to Care for Seniors” exhibition and activities were curated by OHH Dear Communications at the end of 2023. This project transformed the outcomes of the “Ageing Well” initiative into a community art exhibition, workshops, and public guided tours.
The project began with visits: the OHH Dear team conducted interviews with women involved in the initiative who care for elderly residents living alone or double ageing families in the same district. The team also observed these women visiting the seniors at their homes, gathering material that formed the basis of the exhibition.
Together with exhibition design team Studio MARY, OHH Dear Communications transformed the collected materials into multi-sensory elements. These included the “Elderly Confessions Telephone Booth,” a phone booth installation playing multiple audio recordings of the women’s stories; a “Sham Shui Po Seniors’ Life Map,” visually presenting the life paths of several seniors living alone or as elderly couples; a “Story Stall,” which connected objects to stories illustrating the women’s clever ways of managing daily interactions with the elderly; and the “Ageing Well Calendar,” which distilled the women’s observations and feelings into daily tips for caring for seniors. The calendar metaphor symbolises everyday life, and the act of tearing off calendar pages invites visitors to feel that “care is hidden in the everyday,” echoing the core message of the “Ageing Well” project-that everyone has the ability and means to care for seniors.
During the ten-day run of the “Ageing Well: 100 Ways to Care for Seniors” community art exhibition, over a thousand visitors came to learn about the lives of seniors living alone or as elderly couples in Sham Shui Po, and ways to care for them. Concurrent and subsequent activities included guided tours led by the participating women, focusing on seniors’ life routes, and design thinking workshops for these women to encourage and inspire them to reflect on ageing and caring for seniors through a design thinking approach.
